Quicksilver Manual > Modules > Browsing Results
Navigating the Results Window
You can navigate the Results Window from the keyboard:
- Up and Down Arrow Keys - select a result.
- Right Arrow or / - show the contents of the item (for example, the contents of a folder).
- Option-Right Arrow or Option-/ - show an alternative contents list (for example, invisible files or package contents).
- Left Arrow or Shift-/ - show item parent (go up the folder hierarchy).
- Esc - return to normal search mode (i.e. exit Browse Mode). Escape again to dismiss the QS interface completely.
Note that you can also use search abbreviations in Browse Mode. For example, you might press / to descend into your Home folder, then type mu to select the Music Folder, type / again to descend into the Music folder, and so on. This is a very speedy way to navigate your hard drive when you're not sure what you're looking for.
Uses of the Results Window
- To view and select among the alternative matches for your search
- To browse files and folders on your hard drive
Structure of the Results Window
{Tc======note,Rc======noteheader}Tip
If you know you want to browse your hard drive right away, summon the Command Window and hold the / key for a second. This will load your primary hard drive in the first field for you to browse.
When you perform a search using the Command Window, the Results Window displays the other items matching your search. Similarly, if you browse your hard drive (see Tip on the right), the Results Window shows the contents of your drive. If you have the 'Show other matches' option in the Matching Preferences pane set to 'Never', you need to press the down arrow to display the Results Window. If you have set the preference to 'Immediately' or 'Delayed', it will appear automatically.
The screenshot below shows the Results Window while browsing a Music folder using the Bezel interface (see Command Preferences):
{Tc======note,Rc======noteheader}Note
In the screenshot, no score is shown as the Results Window is displaying the results of a browse command rather than a search.
- The highlight shows the currently selected item, which is also shown in the first field of the Command Window. A right-facing arrow at the right of the item (>), indicates that the item has contents that can be browsed by pressing the / key. If you try to browse an item with no contents, the Results Window shakes slightly as a tactful hint that you've just done something rather silly. The label of the item column shows the total number of items in the list, and the position of the selected item in the list.
- The circle in the first column of the Results Window represents the Score of the item. This gives an indication of how well the selected item matches the search abbreviation you have entered. A higher score is represented by a darker gray color. If you Control-click the Score circle, a contextual menu appears. Here, you can set the current item as the default match for the search abbreviation you entered, by choosing 'Set as Default for …'. This is useful if you know that - for example - you want the folder 'Aqualung' to be found when you enter the abbreviation al. The Contextual menu also displays the current Score of the item, and allows you to decrease the score if it has previous been assigned an abbreviation.
- The filtering drop-down menu allows you to change the way that search results are displayed:
- Snap - as you enter search terms, the list will scroll to display the item that best matches your search, but all of the items (even those not matching the search) will be displayed in the list.
- Filter - as you enter search terms, the list will only show items matching the search.
- Filter all (Esc) - acts in the same way as 'Filter', but includes the catalog in the search. Normally, entering Browse Mode (by pressing /) restricts the search to items below the browsed item in the folder hierarchy. In this screenshot, the search would be restricted to items within the Music folder. 'Filter all' overrides this behavior and searches everything. Hitting the activation hotkey or escape will revert to this type of search.
- The status item at the bottom of the window displays extra information on the selected item. In the case of files, the path is shown.
- The header of the window displays 'Browsing' while in Browsing Mode, and the current search abbreviation while in Search Mode. If the search abbreviation has matched at least one item, the text is colored blue, and colored red if it does not match any items.
The Results Window can be resized in the normal way by dragging the resize handle at the bottom right (or, in some cases, left) of the window.
