Nocturne

Sometimes you should be afraid of the light…

Nocturne is a simple app for switching a computer to night vision mode. It does, however, add a few things:

Features

  • Color correction in inverted and monochrome modes - you can correct hues when inverted and won't lose a channel when using tinted monochrome.
  • Window shadow toggling - if glowing windows aren't your thing.
  • Background removal - hide the desktop picture so you don't see an inverted version.

Turning Nocturne On and Off

After you launch Nocturne, an icon will appear in your menu bar showing a tiny black sun with a white crescent moon inside it. Click here for the drop-down menu to turn Nocturne on and off. If you don't notice this little feature, you may not be able to figure out how to turn Nocturne off once you start it!

Feature Requests

  • Ability to disable inverted screen on videos and/or images
  • Ability to switch automatically between night and day modes based on time of day or custom schedule
  • Invert only specified windows/applications - possible, but very difficult
  • Ability to enable/disable by clicking on the menu item (add a preference for that)
  • Ability to enable/disable by (customizable) keyboard shortcut
  • Filters to simulate various forms of color-blindness (useful for accessibility conscious designers)
  • Ability to mute/change volume
  • Ability to remember monitor profiles and to apply changes onto to specific monitors
  • Ability to enable when the screen brightness is lowered to a certain level (useful for displays with built-in brightness controls)

Known Issues

  • Secondary monitors are not handled for many of the options
  • Monochrome mode very slow on Intel MacBook Pros.
  • Text edit cursor not inverting correctly in carbon apps, causing it to be invisible
  • When coming out of screensaver, settings for Nocturne are ignored. The only way to re-enable the settings are to tweak values within preferences or to restart the app.
  • Ambient light sensor not functioning properly on Mac Air.
  • Most small fonts are blurry.
